Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
Human rights belong to every human being and must never be ignored or violated for any reason. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq needs a justice system that genuinely protects human dignity, freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
For this reason, we call on the government and all relevant authorities to take the following clear and concrete steps:
1. Protect freedom of expression
No citizen should face threats, arbitrary detention, or punishment simply for expressing a political, social, or personal opinion or for peacefully criticizing those in power, provided that they act within the law.
2. Protect journalists and civil society activists
Journalists, human rights defenders, and civil society activists must be able to carry out their work freely and without fear. Any threats, attacks, or intimidation against them must be investigated independently and transparently.
3. Guarantee fair trials for everyone
No person should be punished without credible evidence and a fair legal process. Every allegation must be examined by an independent court in accordance with the law.
4. Ensure the independence of the judiciary
Political authorities must not interfere unlawfully in courts or judicial proceedings. Justice must be independent, impartial, and equal for everyone.
5. Investigate allegations of human rights violations
Any allegation involving abuse, torture, threats, violence, or other violations of human rights must be investigated independently, seriously, and transparently. The results should be made public whenever legally possible.
6. End impunity
No one, regardless of their position, political influence, wealth, or connections, should be above the law. If someone is suspected of committing a crime, the case must be investigated and handled according to the law and through a fair judicial process.
7. Increase government transparency
The government should provide clear and accessible information about human rights, arrests, investigations, and important decisions affecting citizens, while respecting legitimate privacy and legal protections.
8. Protect peaceful citizens and peaceful assembly
Citizens must be able to organize peaceful demonstrations and civil society activities in accordance with the law without intimidation, unnecessary force, or retaliation.
9. Strengthen human rights institutions
Human rights institutions must be able to operate independently and without political pressure. Citizens must have safe and effective mechanisms for submitting complaints and seeking justice.
10. Apply the law equally
The law must not be strict for one person and weak for another. Justice must not depend on political power, money, personal connections, or social status. The law must be applied equally to everyone.
Our Final Demand
We call on the government to demonstrate its commitment to human rights not merely through words and promises, but through concrete action.
We demand freedom, not lawlessness.
We demand justice, not revenge.
We demand transparency, not secrecy.
We demand equality, not double standards.
And we demand that no person, institution, or political authority stand above the law.
A strong Kurdistan is one where the government does not fear its people, and the people do not fear their government — because their relationship is built on the rule of law, justice, human rights, equality, and human dignity.
